The drawings in this book are of buildings in Ishinomaki, a city in north eastern Japan, made during 2012 & 2013 on watercolour paper with a simple fountain pen. Many were drawn at cafe's in Ishinomaki from photographs I took while living there in 2012. Others were requested during my artist in residence and exhibition in Ishinomaki, 'Build with Light' at Hiyori Art Center, April & May 2013.

この本に掲載した宮城県石巻市にある建造物の線画は2012年から2013年、シンプルな万年筆を用いて水彩画用紙に描かれたものである。2012年の石巻での生活の中で僕自身が撮影した写真を元に、多くは石巻にある様々なカフェで作品は生まれた。他のいくつかの作品は、2013年4月から5月にレジデンスアーティストとして滞在した石巻にある日和アートセンターでの個展「光とつくる」が開催された際に依頼されたものである。

The first sight of many visitors to the city is of the colourful main train station, its' roof painted with famous manga figures, buses and taxis pull in and out, the station cafe hosting school kids, salary men ＆ tourists alike. Many drawings in this book were created while having a coffee in this cafe.
この町を訪れる多くの人にとって、一番最初に目に入るのがこのカラフルな駅舎だ。 屋根には有名なマンガキャラクターが描かれ、タクシーやバスが行き交い、駅のカフェには学生やサラリーマン、旅行者達が集う。この本に掲載する絵の多くはこのカフェで、コーヒーを飲みながら描かれた。

This large sign [top] sits in the heart of one of the most devastated areas. It was built by a local man and his friends to encourage the people of his city in the week after the tsunami. The man's business and home [bottom] were previously on the site. He visited my exhibition of drawings almost by chance, seeing it as he drove home. After talking and viewing the works it again sparked his own passion to see his city rebuilt strongly and proudly. His response and encouragement was the inspiration to create this book of drawings I made for this city and the people who call it home.
この大きな看板は（上）被害が大きかった地域の中心地に設置されている。津波が街を襲った一週間後に、地元の男性とその友人達が地元の人たちを元気付けようと制作したものだ。かつてこの男性の自宅兼職場が（下）この場所にあった。彼は本当に偶然、帰宅途中に車で通りすがりに僕の絵を見かけて展示会に来てくれた。作品を見ながら色々と話し、それが力強く、誇らしげに復興した街を見たいという彼自身の気持ちに再び火をつけたようだった。そしてこの街の為に、この場所を故郷と呼ぶ人々の為にこの本を作り上げようと僕に刺激を与えてくれたのが、その男性の反応と声援だった。

Located in a cool side street, old and new are combined in the twin timber roof design of Hiyori Kitchen, the cafe opened after the 2011 disaster to feed locals and visitors to the city. Ishinomaki Lab created the contemporary timber designs on the ground floor and the second floor and roof are around 100 years old.
雰囲気の良い通りに位置する日和キッチンには、古いものと新しいものが木製の２つ並んだ屋根のデザインに共存する。2011年の震災後に地元の人々やこの街を訪れる人々の為にオープンしたカフェ。１階部分は近代的な木製のデザインを石巻工房が作り上げ、２階と屋根部分は築100年程になる。

A gigantic spaceship sits upon a small island in the Kitakami river. This alien building survived the 6m tsunami waves that thrashed the island and destroyed most of the other structures.
巨大な宇宙船が北上川の中瀬にある。この異質な建物は、中瀬を飲み込みほぼ全ての建造物を破壊した６メートルもの津波に耐えた。

Among battered trees and in the shadow of the manga museum stands an old church building that also withstood the tsunami waves, originally built in 1880, it is the oldest timber church in Japan. The building was the focus and reason I first came to Ishinomaki in March 2012 for an art project, light projections onto the scaffolding surrounding the church, responded to the sound of voices, song and music, hoping to give encouragement a year after the March 11 2011 disaster. The church has been recognised as a historic building and will be rebuilt again in the near future.

ぼろぼろに傷付いた森林の中にあり、マンガ博物館の影に建つのは、これもまた津波の害を逃れた木造建ての教会。1880年に最初のものが建てられ、今では日本最古の木造教会だという。 この建物は2012年の3月にアートプロジェクトの為に僕が石巻を初めて訪れた目的だった。教会を取り囲んだ工事用の足場とそこにかけられたシートに光を投影し、2011年3月11日の惨事から１年目の節目に応援の気持ちを届けようと、声、歌、音楽といったものに反応させた。

A famous historic building in the old down town district of Ishinomaki covered in ceramic tiles. It majestically shimmers with subtle colours in the afternoon sunlight. I hope it’ll be proudly restored in the future.
陶製タイルがあふれる石巻の古い下町にある、有名な歴史的建造物。午後の太陽の光を浴び微かな色を放ちながら揺らめく。将来見事に再建される事を願う。

The contemporary Kankeimaru building sits only a few blocks away from the old Kankeimaru. A large modern building, it contains contemporary ceramics and designer fashion wares. It stands a little awkwardly among the much older buildings, but shares their history of survival.
この新しい建物は観慶丸商店から数ブロック離れたところにあり、大きくシンプルモダンな建物の中には 近代的な陶器とブランド物の器物が置いてある。古い町並みの中にやや不自然な感じで佇んでいるが、それでも生存の記録を歴史に残している。

This unique old wooden building sits among modern neighbours in a small lane near the home of the family I lived with. I am told the building is about 100 years old and was a brothel, the large curtained windows on the ground floor a give away it's history for those who know.
この特徴的な古い木造建築物は僕がお世話になった家族が住む家の近くにある、小さな道にモダンな住宅に囲まれて建っていた。聞くところによると築推定100年程でかつては売春宿だったという。知る人にとっては１階のカーテンのかかった大きな窓が証拠となっているらしい。

My favourite cafe in Ishinomaki, made from a shipping container, selling flowers, food and local produce. Many of the drawings in this book were drawn here on sunny afternoons, enjoying coffee, conversation and reflecting on my time living in Tohoku.
石巻でのお気に入りのカフェ。運送用コンテナーを改造したもので、お花、食品、地元の商品を売っている。この本の中の作品の殆どのものがこの場所で、東北での生活を思い返し、コーヒーとおしゃべりを楽しみながら描かれた。

A faded yellow building, this musical instrument shop was badly damaged by the tsunami, but is another sign of the strong spirit of the people here to rebuild. Mud and water damaged pianos can often be seen being repaired in the lane beside the shop.
楽器の専門店であった色あせた黄色の建物は、津波による大きな被害を受けたが、地元の人々の強い再建への思いの目印として存在する。泥と水でピアノがダメージを受けたが、店舗裏の小道で修理される様子が度々見受けられた。

A contemporary designed building constructed in the old district which was heavily damaged by the tsunami. The raw timber facade on the 2 buildings features a large vertical garden.
津波被害を多大に受けた古い街に佇んだ、近代的なデザインの建物。２つの建物の木造の壁面は、垂直にのびる庭園が特徴。

A resilient home and beautiful traditional garden in central ishinomaki sits elevated above the ground. The defiant blue corrugated steel structure a quiet lesson about survial.
石巻の中央に位置する小さな要塞のような家屋と伝統的な美しい日本庭園は地面よりも高さを上げてある。芯の強さを感じる青い波形の鉄構造は生き残りの象徴となっている。

This is the first drawing i made in this series while living in Ishinomaki. The tiles and character of the small pizza and crepe cafe gave me the passion to document some of the other buildings I saw on my daily walks around the city.
この作品が石巻での生活の中でこのシリーズの初めてのものとなった。 このタイルと小さなピザ・クレープのカフェの雰囲気を見て、毎日この街を散策する際に見かける他の建物も、是非記録に残したいという情熱をかき立てた。

With beaufiful faded red wood, dirty windows and large steel doors this warehouse stands quietly in a back street. It was a treasure to find it on one of my explorations.
美しく色あせた赤木材、汚れた窓、大きな鉄製の扉があるこの工場は静かに裏通りに建っていた。散策中にこの建物を僕がみつけたのは貴重だった。

Along a beautiful small lane is this delightful French restaurant on the 2nd floor. The lovely couple that run it asked if I would draw their restaurant as part of my exhibition of ink drawings at Hiyori Art Center in April/May 2013.

This small orange van from a local bakery can be seen driving around the streets of Ishinomaki delivering the day's bread.

A unique looking building covered in a patchwork of blue corrugated steel sheets. Often the bass heavy sounds of reggae and dub music shimmers into the night air from within it.

Another favourite cafe, this older style Japanese coffee house is run by a lovely couple always smiling and serving a variety of beans from all corners of the world. The character of this place was it's charm, always the regular patrons sitting along the bar chatting with the barista. The window seats were a great place to spend an afternoon with friends or drawing.
これもまた別のお気に入りカフェ。古いスタイルの喫茶店は、世界各地からの様々な豆を毎日笑顔で挽く素敵なカップルの経営。この場所の特徴は、そのかわいらしさ、そしてカウンター席に座りバリスタと会話を楽しむ常連客。窓側の席は友達と一緒に過ごしたり絵を描いたりする午後には最適な場所だった。

A complex drawing was requested during my exhibition. It was created from many photos, taken over different years and different angles. The drawing bringing back something lost for the owner.

A small bar I didn't manage to visit while I stayed in Ishinomaki but that was requested by a Jazz singer who was also visiting the city. She visited my exhibition before performing at a concert in the city.

The view from the Shinkansen as I returned to Ishinomaki in 2013, the snow blanketed the rice fields and mountains, roads cut like black ink lines across the whiteness, crisp and beautiful.
2013年、石巻へ戻る際の新幹線の車窓から。雪は田んぼや山を白く覆い、道路は白さの中の黒いインクの線のようだった。新鮮な感じで綺麗だった。
I was very fortunate to be taken by my friend to this gorgeous old onsen in the mountains. The wooden onsen building soaked with character from all it's years, revived the spirit and body. The owner, a collector of vintage cars, displayed them proudly beside the weathered timber building.
友人にこんな素敵な山奥の秘境温泉まで連れて行ってもらってとても恵まれていた。長い年月に埋もれた木造の温泉家屋は、心も体も癒してくれた。ビンテージカーのコレクターでもあるオーナーは、木造の建物の外に誇らしげにこの車を飾っていた。

The newly built and brightly coloured trailer hotel in the devastated town of Onagawa is a great place for visitors to support the rebuilding of the town and learn about it's culture.
カラフルに色付けされたトレイラーを利用した、被害の大きかった女川地区に作られた新しい宿泊施設。訪問者にとって、復興支援と共にその文化をも学ぶ事のできる最高の場所。

A beautiful small shrine overlooking Ishinomaki city. I found this place on one of my meanders through the city. Atop a long narrow set of stairs hidden in the backstreets of central Ishinomaki, the cherry blossoms hung like clouds around the shrine, and bird & insects created an amazing natural symphony in the air.
石巻を見下ろす小さくも美しい神社。街をあてもなく歩いていた時にみつけた場所。石巻の中心街の裏道に隠された長く細い階段を登ったところにあり、雲のように桜が神社を覆い、鳥や虫達の鳴き声がそこに流れる空気に自然のシンフォニーを作り上げていた。

Australian artist & designer Richard Byers works across drawing, photography, interactive video art, software programming & product design. Richard collaborates with musicians (classical, improvisation, electronic or traditional instruments) in live performance with sound responsive light projections. He has performed and exhibited in Lichtenstein, Germany, Japan and Australia and travels regularly between his home in Melbourne and friends & family in Japan.
オーストラリア出身のアーティスト、デザイナー。線描、写真、インタラクティブな映像インスタレーション、ソフトウェアプログラミング、プロダクトデザインを手掛ける。音楽家（クラシック、即興、エレクトロニックミュージック、伝統的な楽器）との音と光のコラボレーションも多い。ライブパフォーマンス、展覧会はリテンシュタイン、ドイツ、日本、オーストラリアで行われる。現在はオーストラリア、メルボルンにある自宅と日本の友人や家族との間を頻繁に行き来している。
